An ancient curse says “May you live in interesting times.” That’s because times that are interesting are also some of the most turbulent, and yet, the ones filled with the most opportunities.

In this issue of Real Answers, we’ll look into some interesting futures. We’ll talk with Max Fuller of U.S. Xpress, who seems already to be living there – and loving every minute of it. Something of a “contrarian,” Max takes a different view of things from many people, and his vision is one of optimism for trucking – and for America.

We also visit with Knight Transportation, which has a clear and optimistic vision of its future – and a clear plan to get there. Not only that, Knight is willing to help other fleets create their own visions and plans for similar bright futures.

We’ll take a new look at fuel economy, with the third edition of our Guide To Large Truck Fuel Economy For A New Millennium, and at new technologies – including CD-ROMs and the Internet – that can provide education and information for you and your employees.

And here’s a question: Do you HAVE a future? Our editor shares his experience with heart attacks, bypass surgery, and steps you can take to help you survive into the next millennium.

Tires have a future too. Often, they are reincarnated as retreads. We’ll look at the latest results of the annual International Tire & Rubber Association retreadability survey, and talk a bit about how you can improve the retreadability of your tires.

And, we’ll see how rotation can extend tire life into the future and how scrap tires can actually be used to reduce pollution.

So why isn’t the future what it used to be? In our view, it’s because it’s better!
