OVERVIEW BY   Singh Ahluwalia

overview.jpg (9884 bytes) It’s often been said that the only people who like change are wet babies. And yet "change" is a reality. It’s what we do every day. And what is done to us.

Ultimately, we have a choice. Either we can ask the kind of questions that will help us better understand and manage change. Or, we can let change manage us.
This issue of REAL QUESTIONS/REAL ANSWERS asks those kind of questions about the nature and direction of change in our industry.

Perhaps the first change you’ll notice is that there’s someone else’s picture where Walt Weller’s once was. That’s because Walt is now President of Bridgestone/Firestone Mexico. I have been appoint- ed Vice President of Truck Tire Sales for Bridgestone/Firestone, and look forward to working with you.

As you begin to read, you’ll find the insights of Tom Donohue, President and CEO of the American Trucking Associations (ATA) on how trucking is changing in order to take advantage of the tremendous business opportunities that lie ahead.

One of those changes—adjusting business strategies to meet new customer demands—is the focus of a discussion with Jeff Crowe and Brian Kinsey of LANDSTAR. And, you’ll discover valuable technical information on changing the way you look at tire management to improve wear uniformity, getting longer tire life on short hauls with the R250 radial and gaining a better understanding of tire and wheel balance.

For change to be productive, it needs to have a strong foundation. Tom Moore, Editor of FLEET OWNER, tries to crack trucking’s genetic code as a means of directing change.

So as we consider the dynamics of change, we’re reminded of something Herman Melville wrote in MOBY DICK, " We must always remember that the questions are just as important as the answers. Perhaps more so."

Expect us to keep asking real questions. And presenting real answers.

We’d really like to hear your reaction, suggestions or questions about this issue. So please use the response card we’ve enclosed.
