If you're like me, you once asked questions like that.
It's how we learned about life when we were young.
But sooner or later, our parents and teachers gave us the message
that such questions were not welcome. So we became more cautious about the questions we
asked and who we asked them of. Or, we asked questions to parade our knowledge, not to
gather more.
Somewhere along the way, we put more emphasis on the answers than
discovering the right questions.
Yet, the simplest questions have literally hanged industries,
products and even services. (Perhaps that's what Einstein meant when he said that
"imagination is more important than knowledge.")
For example. Thirty years ago, a Swiss engineer took his family
for a picnic in the country. As they walked, nasty little burrs clung to their clothes.
Instead of picking it off and tossing it away, he asked a question. "What can be done
with this burr?" His answer was VelcroTM .
At Bridgestone, we've always placed more emphasis on the quality
of questions. Real questions posed by customers, our own people, even competitors-not
artificial questions created to help shape a message.
Each issue, we'll provide Real Answers from customers, our own
people and perhaps, competitors. This issue, for example, you'll discover some intriguing
insights from Vince Fortuna, VP Maintenance, Ryder Commercial Leasing & Services on
how relationships affect tire performance. Jim Blitz of Praxair explains how, and why, he
specs tires for safety and longevity in a dangerous application. And, our engineers
explain how they created a revolutionary steer tire from customer concerns.
We hope this magazine becomes your primary resource for solutions
to some of the difficult operating, maintenance, specing and tire management issues you
face.
But we want your questions, too.
Please send them to us on the response card included in this
issue. As you challenge us with your real world questions, we can both grow as we search
for the answers you can use to improve the efficiency and profitability of your business.
When that happens, progress does as well.
P.S. Why are our toes in front of our feet?
I honestly don't know, but I'll find out. Good Question!
